How it works

  1. 1

    Export two payrolls

From your payroll system, download this payroll's preview and last payroll as spreadsheets (Excel or CSV). The same report you'd look at anyway.

  2. 2

    Open both here

Drop them in. Tell it who left since last time, if anyone. It reads the files on your computer and shows each step as it checks.

  3. 3

    Look, fix, sign

See every change that needs your eyes. Mark each one "fine" or "needs a fix", sign, and print a one-page record for your boss.

What it catches

Every check compares this payroll with the last one, and with what's normal for each person at your company.

  • Someone who left is still being paidOr someone who should be paid is missing.
  • Hours typos45 overtime hours instead of 4.5. 800 instead of 80.
  • Double paymentsThe same person twice, or the same check number used twice.
  • Pay rate changes nobody mentioned$18 an hour last time, $81 this time.
  • Big swings in payAnyone whose pay jumped or dropped more than usual for them.
  • Deductions that started or stopped401(k), health insurance and the rest.
  • Paychecks of $0Or pay with no tax taken out.
  • Payment changesA switch from direct deposit to a paper check.
  • New people and one-time payNew hires, bonuses and reimbursements, so you can confirm them.
  • Totals that don't add upIts totals must match your file's totals, so you know nothing was skipped.

Your payroll never leaves your computer.

The checker runs inside your web browser. Your files are opened and compared on your own computer. They're never uploaded to us or to anyone else, so there's nothing for IT to review and nothing of yours on our servers to leak.

Don't take our word for it. Open the checker, turn off your Wi-Fi, and run a check. It still works.

  • The checker page tells your browser to block it from sending anything at all. Your IT person can confirm it in two minutes.
  • Your past checks and sign-offs are saved on your computer, not ours.
  • Save a backup file to your company drive whenever you like, with a password if you want one.
  • No accounts, no tracking inside the checker.

A record for your boss, every payday.

Every check ends with a one-page record: which files were compared, what changed, what you looked at, what you fixed, and who signed off. Print it or save it as a PDF.

It's proof the payroll was checked by someone careful, with your name on it.

It learns what normal looks like.

Each check is saved on your computer. Over time it knows who works overtime, whose pay changes every payday, and who's part-time, so it stops bothering you about the usual and points at the unusual.

Questions

Doesn't my payroll system already check?

Some do, and that's good. But they're checking their own work. This is an independent second look that also remembers what normal looks like at your company, and gives you a signed record of every payroll.

What files do I need?

Two spreadsheets: this payroll and last payroll, one row per person, from your payroll system's reports (Excel or CSV). A payroll register, payroll journal or payroll details report works. If a column isn't recognized, you can tell it what the column means once, and it remembers.

Do you see my payroll?

No. Your files are read by your own browser and never sent anywhere. The page is locked so it can't send data even if it tried. You can test it with your Wi-Fi off.

What happens if I switch computers?

Save a backup file from the "Past checks" screen and open it on the new computer. Your history comes with you.

Is this tax or legal advice?

No. It checks math and changes between payrolls. It doesn't tell you what the law requires. You and your payroll provider stay in charge of the payroll itself.

Who is it for?

The person at a company of 10 to 500 people who runs payroll, often by themselves, often alongside HR or office management. Bookkeepers who run payroll for clients use it too.
